Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing (Professional Nursing)
Program Options
- Four-Semester Traditional Option
Classes begin each Fall semester. Classes are offered in day hours. Clinical experiences are generally scheduled during the day hours but occasional evening and weekend rotations may be necessary. Once admitted to the Nursing Program, students can expect to complete the A.A.S. Degree in Nursing in four semesters.
- Part-time Option
Classes begin each August and are scheduled two days per week. Classes extend past the traditional
semester boundaries. Clinical experiences may occur during the day or evening hours with occasional weekends and may include 12-hour shifts in selected specialties. Once admitted, students may expect to complete the part-time option in 28months, one semester longer than the traditional program option.
- Accelerated Degree Option
Classes extend past the traditional semester boundaries including summer months. Clinical experiences may occur during the day or evening hours with occasional weekends. Once admitted to the Nursing Program, students can expect to complete the A.A.S. Degree in Nursing in approximately 16 months.
- Hybrid / Blended Option
Hybrid or blended nursing courses combine face-to-face instruction with online, computer-based learning. In a blended course, a significant part of the course content is delivered online, and the quantity of classroom time is decreased. Students will be required to attend class on designated days which will be noted on the course syllabus. Required coursework and some testing will be completed
online. All laboratory practice will be completed at the college; all clinical experiences will be conducted in local area facilities with a clinical instructor on site. All students are required to attend class the first day for orientation.
Banner Health Nurse Fellows Program
The Banner Health Nurse Fellows Program is offered by Banner Health, Arizona's largest health care provider, and is designed to increase the capacity of existing college nursing programs while building a pipeline of qualified registered nurses for Banner. The program provides students enter in the nursing program the opportunity to receive educational assistance in exchange for an employment commitment after completion of the degree program.
Program Details
Approximately 30 participants will be selected from a pool of students at GateWay Community College who have already completed their academic requirements and are ready to enter the nursing program
- Banner Health will pay for the cost of tuition, books, and fees directly to GateWay Community College.
- Individuals selected to participate in the Banner Health Nursing Fellows Program will agree to work for Banner for three years after completing their nursing program.
- The Banner Health Nurse Fellows program is a full time, accelerated option, extending through the summer months for completion in approximately 16 months.
- Admissions occur each March, July and October

Applications will be available at the information sessions. Applicants interested in attending the Banner Health Nurse Fellows Program must attend an information session and must sign in upon arrival. Applicants must return the completed application to the Nursing Division office at GateWay according to the schedule on the application. Once the Nursing Department verifies your placement status in the Maricopa Community College District Nursing Program, the Nursing Department will forward your application to Banner Health. Representatives from Banner Health will notify selected applicants and schedule an interview.
During the information session you will receive information about the program, review the terms of the Educational Assistance Agreement with representatives of Banner health, and receive information on the selection process. Only those applicants attending one of the information sessions will receive an application, completing the interview process, and signing an Educational Assistance Agreement will be eligible to enter the Banner Health Nurse Fellows Program.
Bilingual Nursing Fellowship Program (BNFP)
The Bilingual Nursing Fellowship Program is designed to increase the number of Registered Nurses who read, write, and speak fluently in both Spanish and English.
With funding secured the the office of U.S. Congressman Ed Pastor, the program, created as the Hispanic Nursing Fellowship, addresses the critical shortage of Registered Nurses in Arizona, particularly those who are able to communicate thoroughly with Spanish-speaking patients.
South Mountain Community College, a federally designated Hispanic-serving Institution, will provide the program's general education courses and GateWay Community College will offer the nursing instruction.
Selection into the program is through a competitive process. Once accepted, fellows will work toward the completion of an Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing. the program offers each fellow a monthly stipend, extensive academic support, and mentoring.
The Nursing Program Pathway is offered as part of the Bilingual Nursing Fellowship Program. By enrolling in the nursing pathway, students will complete the Nurse Assisting Program, the Fast Track Practical Nursing Program, and the Maricopa Community College District Nursing Program. The nursing pathway provides multiple exit points for employment that begins with Nurse Assisting and continues to the Practical Nurse certificate and Registered Nurse degree program. The Nursing Program provides eligibility for students seeking certification and licensure through the Arizona State Board of Nursing. Licensing requirements are the exclusive responsibility of the Arizona State Board of Nursing.
Student Expectations:
- Students must be willing and able to attend college level classes each semester including summer semesters.
- Students must have transportation to South Mountain Community College, GateWay Community College, and various clinical site in the Phoenix area.
Program Requirements:
- Ability to speak, read, and write English and Spanish
- High School diploma or GED
- College level placement into English, Math, and Reading
- Willing to commit to a 3 year, 12 month program
- Written essay describing your interest in nursing as a career
- Oral interview
